2021 Poster, by artist John Kosel
John Kosel ~ Seligman, Arizona

This year's Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering limited-edition print is a particularly special one. Artist John Kosel just happens to be a member of The High Country Cowboys, our premier performers for 2021. The painting, "High Country Autumn", is based on a scene from the movie "Night Passage" that was filmed in the area in 1957. The mountains are the Grenadier Range, a subrange of the San Juan Mountains, situated within the Weminuche Wilderness near Silverton. The mountain in the background is Mount Garfield. John has been painting in earnest since the age of 9 when his dad Andrew, an accomplished wood carver, gave him a canvas and some brushes. Much of John's inspiration for his paintings comes from the beautiful landscapes of the ranch country of Red Lodge, Montana, where he was born. His focus is on lush mountain scenery, cowboys and the American frontier, much like Charlie Russell, the internationally known artist of the Old West whom he credits with influencing his work. Many of John's paintings hang in the historic Pollard Hotel in Red Lodge. Although painting was very satisfying to John, eventually he and his two brothers decided to pursue singing and playing music full time. Since they formed The High Country Cowboys in 2014, they have been honored by the Pro Cowboy Country Association and the International Western Music Association.

After 33 years, John and much of his family left Montana and moved to northern Arizona last year. The High Country Cowboys are starting to perform again, and John still paints. However, recently he has begun training and rehoming horses that have been given up for rescue due to the pandemic and drought that has stricken much of the state. This new endeavor has been keeping him busy but he manages to find time to finish a painting or two.
